Top Ten: Favourite characters in books

10. Who? RON WEASLEY

From? HARRY POTTER- J.K. ROWLING

Why? His fiery temper and humour made him stand out for me as one of the many beloved characters in the books. Along with his loyalty to Harry and secret affection for Hermione, he is such a lovable character.

9. Who? SKEETER PHELAN

From? THE HELP- KATHRYN STOCKETT

Why? Skeeter is ambitious and is determined to be a writer- something which I felt I could personally identify with. I love the fact that she has her own strong views and opinions which she does not abandon, although it makes her friendless. She cares about the Mississippi society she lives in and works hard to actually make a change in that society.

8. Who? MR DARCY

From? PRIDE AND PREJUDICE- JANE AUSTEN

Why? Initially a snobby character who is full of pride, Darcy attempts to become a better man and actually deserves Elizabeth Bennet by the end of the novel. And because he’s, well, Mr Darcy.

7.Who? HENRY DE TAMBLE

From? THE TIME TRAVELLER’S WIFE- AUDREY NIFFENEGGER

Why? For creating one of the most touching, romantic stories in literature- Niffenegger beautifully crafts a love story between him and Claire, made all the more touching by the fact that they are often torn away from each other by time travel.

6. Who? ESTHER GREENWOOD

From? THE BELL JAR- SYLVIA PLATH

Why? Esther is a very striking and memorable character because of her struggle in the Bell Jar, and her character helps to give a shocking sense of what it may have been like for an American woman of the 1950s.

5. Who? LYRA BELACQUA

From? HIS DARK MATERIALS TRILOGY- PHILIP PULLMAN

Why? She’s passionate, strong-willed and determined- a real feisty character who does not take no for an answer!

4. Who? MATILDA WORMWOOD

From? MATILDA- ROALD DAHL

Why? Absolutely loved Matilda as a child- she’s a wonderful, warm character who loves books and has an amazing power- how can you not like her?! Despite her horrible upbringing she justifiably finds happiness at the end of the book.

3. Who? ELIZABETH BENNET

From? PRIDE AND PREJUDICE- JANE AUSTEN

Why? My favourite character from all of Jane Austen’s books- she is in no way perfect but that just makes her easier to identify with. I love her witty remarks, quips and well formed arguments that make her appear as the modern woman, instead of a typically passive female character. The period she lives in means her independence and strong opinions can only go so far- but she is not afraid to voice them when she needs to.

2. Who? SEVERUS SNAPE

From? HARRY POTTER- J.K. ROWLING

Why? How can he not be a favourite? He dangerously acted as a double agent to help rid the wizarding world of Voldemort. He ahad also loved Lily Potter for most of his life, which is why he helped to protect Harry and killed Dumbledore even though he couldn’t bear to. One of the most brilliant characters ever.

1. Who? JANE EYRE

From? JANE EYRE- CHARLOTTE BRONTE

Why? Favourite character of all time. She is independent, always gets back on her feet (even after discovering Rochester’s shocking secret) and relies on no one but herself. I also love her sense of self worth as she refuses to debase herself by staying with Rochester or becoming his mistress instead of his wife. She knows she deserves better and follows her head instead of her heart.
